Grant Programs

The city of Sherbrooke offers three distinct grant programs in the commercial sector. For additional information on each grant, consult the following brief descriptions. Please take note that the information provided should not be considered complete and is provided as a summary of the programs. The provisions of the regulations shall prevail.

Renovation Québec Program

What is this program?

The Renovation Québec Program provides financial assistance for renovations to residential buildings or dual-purpose residential buildings which have major defects to the: structure, exterior walls, roof, electricity, plumbing, heating, or galleries or porches.

Are there specific constraints?

  • Minimum costs of eligible works is $5,000 per dwelling unit or $2,500 per room (rooming house);
  • Works must be carried out after being authorized by the city of Sherbrooke;
  • This program is aimed at specific sectors in each municipality. Please consult the different maps of the boroughs on the city of Sherbrooke website
  • Works must be carried out by a contractor holding a licence from the Régie du bâtiment du Québec.


How much financial assistance can be expected?

The grant is equivalent to 50% of admissible costs. Please consult the program document, found in this section, to determine the maximum grant for a room, studio, three-room apartment, four-room apartment, five-room apartment, and apartment with more than five rooms.

How can it be obtained?

You must contact the city of Sherbrooke’s Urban Development and Planning Department and make an official request. In addition, there is a $100 (non-refundable) fee for your case study analysis. Other fees are applicable according to the number of units in your residential building.

Réno façade

What is the Réno façade program?

Réno façade supports retailers in their desire to embellish the façade of their establishment or place of business: restoration, masonry, bringing out architectural elements and features, etc.

What works are admissible?

  • Renovation of the main façade. Exposed façades on the side or rear are also admissible;
  • Preservation and improvement of old-style cachet and architecture of a building;
  • Preservation of materials, in particular distinctive architectural elements or features;
  • Repairs or cleaning of masonry or wood façades;
  • Repairs or improvements to windows, doors, ornaments and details, and protruding elements;
  • Restore elements or features on the building that are in poor condition;
  • Transformation making the building safer or more functional.

Are there specific constraints?

This grant cannot be obtained for the renovation of building façades on the side and rear if the main façade is in poor condition and is not part of planned renovation.

The financial assistance program for façade renovations applies to establishments on King East Street, between Kennedy Street and the 15th Avenue. In order for you to better visualize the area serviced by this program, please consult the map included in the financial program document.

How much financial assistance can be expected?

The total amount of financial assistance granted is equivalent to one third the actual cost of works, without exceeding $50,000.

How can it be obtained?

You must deposit an official request to the city of Sherbrooke’s Urban Development and Planning Department. Please consult the available document in this section for further information as well as the specific documents required.

You must also plan on a $100 (non-refundable) fee for your case study analysis. A deposit of $678 may also be requested for a sketch by the Rues Principales Foundation illustrating the general architectural direction planned for your building.

Programme d’aide à la rénovation des bâtiments et locaux commerciaux (Financial assistance program for renovating commercial buildings and premises)

What is this program?

This renovation program for exterior and interior renovations is aimed specifically at commercial buildings and premises in downtown Sherbrooke.

What renovation works are admissible?

Many works aimed at restoring façades, preserving architectural details or elements or refurbishing certain exterior features are admissible. In addition, many interior improvement and renovation works to commercial premises are admissible. Consult the program document found in this section for detailed information on eligible renovation works.

Are there specific constraints?

  • The commercial buildings or premises must be located in downtown Sherbrooke. In order to view the eligible area, consult the chart included in the program document;
  • Selected commercial premises must obligatorily be located on the ground floor of a commercial building;
  • Regular or normal maintenance work is not included in this program;
  • Costs of renovation works must be greater than $500.

How much financial assistance can be expected?

Financial assistance may represent one third of the total cost of renovations up to $50,000. Assistance, representing one third of service costs, up to $1,000 may also be obtained for professional plan and estimate services.
