Act Respecting Hours and Days of Admission to Commercial Establishments

Under this Act, legal opening hours of commercial establishments are between:

  • 8 am and 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays
  • 8 am and 9 pm from Monday to Friday
  • 8 am and 5 pm on December 24 and December 31
  • 1 pm and 5 pm on December 26 if it falls on a Saturday or Sunday
  • 1 pm and 9 pm on December 26 if it falls on another day of the week

According to the nature of the products sold, some establishments may open outside the legal hours of admission provided that no more than four persons attend to the operation of the retail business establishment.

No person operating a retail business establishment may permit the presence of any member of the public in the establishment more than 30 minutes after its legal closing time.

The legal opening hours of grocery stores are between:

  • 8 am and 8 pm on Saturdays and Sundays
  • 8 am and 9 pm from Monday to Friday
  • 8 am and 5 pm on December 24 and December 31
  • 1 pm and 8 pm on December 26 if it falls on a Saturday or Sunday
  • 1 pm and 9 pm on December 26 if it falls on another day of the week

A grocery store may provide services outside these legal opening hours provided that not more than four employees attend to the operation of the store.

Commercial establishments must be closed to the public on the following dates:

  • January 1
  • January 2
  • Easter Sunday
  • June 24
  • July 1
  • The first Monday in September
  • December 25
